The True Potential of the SBI Air India Signature Card: A Year-Long Journey

Introduction

The SBI Air India Signature Card is designed for frequent flyers and Air India loyalists, offering notable benefits and a recent upgrade with the revamped Air India Loyalty program. Having used the card for over a year, the blog will provide an in-depth look at its advantages, potential drawbacks, and essential details for prospective cardholders.

Welcome & Annual Benefits: A Strong Start

When you first get your hands on the SBI Air India Signature Card, the welcome benefits are impressive. For an annual fee that’s fairly reasonable, you’re greeted with 20,000 reward points. With the updated Air India Flying Returns program, these points can easily translate into 3-4 domestic economy flights on select routes, making this card a strong contender for frequent travellers.

Moreover, as a cherry on top, the renewal of your card brings in an additional 5,000 bonus miles. This perk essentially offsets the annual fee, making the card nearly free to hold—unless, of course, the benefits are devalued in the future. But as of now, it’s a win-win situation for cardholders.

Earning Points: The 30X Advantage (With a Catch)

One of the standout features of the SBI Air India Signature Card is the ability to earn 30 reward points per ₹100 spent on Air India’s website. This is an industry-leading rate, unmatched by any other card on the market. However, the devil is in the details:

  • Self-Booking Only: The 30X rewards are only applicable when you book a ticket for yourself. If you’re booking for others, the rate drops to 10 points per ₹100, and for any other purchases, it’s just 1 point per ₹100.

Redemption Threshold: Another point to consider is that you can only transfer your SBI reward points to Air India miles in blocks of 5,000, and only once you’ve accumulated a minimum of 10,000 points. This can be a hurdle if you prefer flexibility in redeeming your rewards.

Milestone Benefits: High Spending, High Rewards

For those who spend big, the milestone benefits of this card are where the real value lies. If you manage to spend ₹20 lakhs in a year, you stand to earn a whopping 1,20,000 Air India miles. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Spend ₹5,00,000: Earn 20,000 points
  • Spend ₹10,00,000: Earn 30,000 points
  • Spend ₹20,00,000: Earn 50,000 points

These milestone rewards can significantly boost your miles balance, making it possible to book long-haul international flights or multiple domestic journeys. In addition, the card offers 8 domestic lounge accesses and a Priority Pass—though the latter comes without complimentary access.

The Fine Print: Things to Watch Out For

While the benefits are enticing, there are a few caveats that potential cardholders should be aware of:

  • Frequent Flyer Number Issues: Be meticulous when entering your Frequent Flyer (FF) number during the application process. Any mistake here can result in delays and complications that could take a considerable amount of time to resolve.
  • Activation Conditions: Your FF number isn’t activated until you’ve had at least one revenue activity post-enrollment. Furthermore, to redeem miles for family and friends, you need a minimum of five revenue activities.
  • Points Transfer Process: Transferring points from SBI to Air India isn’t automated. You’ll need to call customer service to initiate the transfer, which, while reliable, takes about seven days to process.

Final Thoughts: Is the SBI Air India Signature Card Worth It?

The SBI Air India Signature Card is undoubtedly a powerful tool for frequent flyers who are loyal to Air India. The generous welcome bonuses, lucrative milestone rewards, and exceptional earning rate on Air India bookings make it an attractive option. However, the card’s value diminishes if you’re not careful with the terms and conditions—especially the restrictions on reward points and the cumbersome transfer process.

If you’re someone who travels frequently with Air India and can navigate the fine print, this card can be a game-changer in maximising your travel rewards. Just be sure to weigh the pros and cons before making it your go-to card.

2. Luxury Travel on a Budget: Axis Atlas The Best Credit Cards for Hotel Stays & Airlines redemption in India 2024

In the crowded world of credit cards, where premium options are aplenty, the Axis Bank Atlas Credit Card stands out as a compelling choice for those passionate about travel and luxury. With a focus on earning miles and providing exclusive benefits, the Atlas Credit Card offers a blend of unique features that cater to the discerning traveller. Let’s dive into what makes this card a noteworthy contender for your wallet.

Overview

The Axis Bank Atlas Credit Card is designed for travellers who appreciate tiered rewards and benefits. With a reward rate ranging from 4% to 18%, this card is tailored for those who spend significantly on airlines and hotels. It comes with an annual fee of ₹5,000 + GST, which is offset by attractive welcome and renewal benefits.

  • Reward Rate: 4% to 18%
  • Annual Fee: ₹5,000 + GST
  • Best For: Direct hotel and airline spends

Unique Selling Proposition (USP): Tiered benefits based on spending

Fees and Benefits

The Atlas Credit Card’s fee structure is straightforward:

  • Joining Fee: ₹5,000 + GST
  • Welcome Benefit: 2,500 Edge Miles (valued up to ₹5,000)
  • Renewal Fee: ₹5,000 + GST
  • Renewal Benefit: Edge Miles vary based on membership tier (Silver, Gold, Platinum)

The welcome benefit of 2,500 Edge Miles can be redeemed for stays or dining at ITC Hotels or Accor Hotels, offering a value up to ₹9,000, making the initial fee a worthy investment.

Design and Rewards

The Atlas Credit Card boasts a sleek and sophisticated design. Unlike other Axis credit cards, it earns “Edge Miles” instead of Edge Rewards, which can be more valuable for frequent travellers.

  • Regular Spends: 2 Edge Miles per ₹100 (2% reward rate)
  • Travel Edge Portal, Airlines & Hotels (Direct): 5 Edge Miles per ₹100 (5% reward rate)

This card has a monthly cap of ₹2 lakhs on the higher reward rate for direct airline and hotel spends, making it an excellent choice for high-value travellers.

Redemption and Capping

Edge Miles can be redeemed in two ways:

  1. Travel Edge Portal: 1:1 for flights and hotels.
  2. Transfer to Airline/Hotel Partners: Transfer ratios vary (e.g., 1:2 for airlines except Marriott Bonvoy).

Notably, the card has a redemption cap of 30,000 Edge Miles (60,000 partner miles) for Group A and 1,20,000 Edge Miles (2.4 lakh partner miles) for Group B, ensuring substantial earning potential for high spenders.

Milestone Benefits

Achieving spending milestones unlocks additional Edge Miles:

  • 3 Lakhs Spend: 2,500 Edge Miles
  • 7.5 Lakhs Spend: 2,500 Edge Miles
  • 15 Lakhs Spend: 5,000 Edge Miles

For those reaching the ₹15 lakh milestone, the total Edge Miles earned can be valued at up to ₹1,44,000, depending on redemption options, showcasing the card’s potential for significant rewards.

Membership Tiers and Lounge Access

The Atlas Credit Card features membership tiers that influence benefits:

  • Silver: Up to 8 domestic and 4 international lounge visits
  • Gold: Up to 12 domestic and 6 international lounge visits
  • Platinum: Up to 18 domestic and 12 international lounge visits

These tiers provide substantial lounge access, both domestically and internationally, making it a valuable card for frequent flyers.

Should You Apply for the Atlas Card?

If you’re seeking a credit card that offers robust travel rewards and premium benefits, the Axis Bank Atlas Credit Card is a strong contender. It’s particularly suitable for those who spend significantly on travel and hotels and are looking for tiered rewards and extensive lounge access.

Given the recent devaluation of the Axis Magnus, the Atlas Credit Card presents a solid alternative for 2024, especially if you’re unable to meet the high thresholds of more premium cards.

My Experience

Having used the Axis Atlas Credit Card since last 1 year, I can say it is one of the best cards available if you love travelling, the reward rate is also pretty good if your expenses are high on travel. The only catch is to book directly on the hotel or airlines website to get 5X benefits, don’t book on aggregator platforms you will only get 2 EM for a spend of INR 100.

My favourite transfer partner from this card is Accor because in Accor 1 point is valued at 1.8 so you can maximise your rewards. I even used this credit card on my Europe trip and did not face any issue even once and received a good value back of 5-10% on my International spends too.

Eligibility and Application

To apply for the Atlas Credit Card, you typically need an annual income of ₹9 lakhs and an existing credit card limit of approximately ₹3 lakhs. The application process is straightforward, and Axis Bank is known for its efficient processing times.

Bottom Line

With its tiered benefits, significant reward potential, and valuable travel perks, the Axis Bank Atlas Credit Card is an attractive option for frequent travelers and those who spend heavily on hotels and airlines. It competes well with other premium cards, offering a blend of practical rewards and luxury benefits.

If you’re considering this card, it could be a worthy addition to your wallet, especially if you value travel rewards and premium benefit
